Family Vacation Ideas

Let us help you brainstorm some great family vacation ideas.

Maybe you want to take a vacation with your kids but haven't got a clue where to go or what would be fun?

Have you been thinking about a Disneyland or Disneyworld vacation but wonder if your kids are too young or too old?

Perhaps, Hawaii and the beautiful beaches is where you were thinking of going?

Does this sound like you? Then let us help you find some family vacation ideas.

We can help you with driving or flying destinations. Long vacations, short vacations, traveling on a budget and even provide some valuable Do's and Don'ts for your consideration when traveling with kids.

So let's get started with those family vacation ideas….

Do you know what type of vacationer you and your kids are? Are you looking for:

A relaxing family vacation

A City Vacation with Kids

An Adventure Vacation

A Combination Vacation

A Tropical Vacation

If you are not sure, we go over all these vacation types in detail in our Family Vacations tab on your left.

One thing to insure a successful family vacation is to get family vacation ideas from each member of your family. What things do they want to do on vacation; these family vacation ideas can lead you right to a destination. You can get these vacation ideas by bringing everyone together in a big group or asking each person individually. Have each family member make a list of places they would like to go or things they would like to do while on vacation.

If your kids cannot come up with ideas, here are some ideas to help them get started:

Water Park

Mini-golf

Go-Karts

Jet Skiing or Para Sailing

Roller Coasters

Horseback Riding

Swimming

Swimming pool

Amusement Parks

Paintball

Sporting events (Major league football, baseball, basketball etc)

Zoo

Aquarium

Trains

Sandy beach

Warm weather or cold weather

Skiing

Hiking

Once the lists are complete, bring the family together and have each member share out loud their family vacation ideas and why they would want to go there or do that particular activity while on vacation and just how important it is to them. If each family member tells why, in detail, they want to go to that location or do that activity, they may be successful in swaying the others; this will also eliminate the "Ok, I'll go but I won’t be happy about it" attitude.

Your goal for the end of this meeting is to create a master family vacation ideas list with everyone’s ideas included but reduced to the top 5 family vacation ideas. Once you have the top five let everyone know that now the adults will take all these ideas into consideration in finalizing the planning for your family’s vacation.

With your family vacation ideas top 5 list complete, there are now a few things you need to consider along the planning trail:

You will need to decide how much you are willing to spend on this vacation, what is your budget?

Will you be driving or flying? Think about how long your children can focus on something:

  • For example, can they truly sit in car for a 6 hours a day without world war three breaking out? If you are traveling by car be sure to check out our great games, snack ideas and more on our car travel tips page.
  • Keep in mind the number of days away from home your family can truly handle. Do not repeat a recent editor experience of going on a family vacation requiring air travel with the vacation to last for 8 days and the kids were ready to go home after 4 days.
  • Maybe it's time to purchase that portable DVD player you have been talking about. It's a great way to keep the kids entertained on while flying or driving.

If you decide to fly keep in mind it may be shorter to get there by plane but you do have to arrive two hours ahead of time required for check-in and security reasons. By all means, check out our air travel tips page.

Remember the age of your kids is an important factor in choosing your kids vacations destinations.

  • Younger kids have fun just going to a hotel with a pool and jumping on the hotel beds, everything else is just gravy to them.
  • If you have teenagers you will need some action or adventure in your family vacation.
  • If you have both young kids and teenagers you may need to split up during the day and that is okay, you don't have to do everything together to have the best family vacation. Small kids enjoy watching Daddy and big Brother/Sister go on the roller coaster and trying to pick them out. Teenagers may want to drop by the arcade while little brother goes on the kiddy carnival rides, but all the family members will enjoy a break by the pool in the afternoon, especially if the pool has a water slide!

So now you know where you and the kids might want to go on vacation, here are a few recommended best kids’ vacations destinations and some suggestions from our visitors.
