A Guide to Alabama Vacations

Alabama Vacations - Alabama is a state known as “the heart of Dixie.” Southern comforts are never far away when one is on a vacation in Alabama and of course Southern charm and hospitality come free!

Birmingham

Those individuals who wish to experience thrills on their Alabama vacations will want to visit Bessemer’s Alabama Adventure. It features three distinct areas, Magic City, USA, Splash Beach Water Park, and Celebration Street. Magic City, USA features many roller coasters, thrill rides, and carnival style rides. Water slides, wave pools, and a variety of other water rides compose Splash Beach, while main street-style attractions make up Celebration Street. Food, old time photos, and souvenirs, can be found on this hopping street!

For education on civil rights one can visit The Civil Rights Institute, which features black history displays and galleries focused on everyday life for African Americans.

Coker

One great State Park to visit on an Alabama vacation is Lake Lurleen State Park. The Park is named after the first lady governor of Alabama, Lurleen Wallace. It features a gorgeous 250-acre lake in a serene setting. Fishing piers, a beach, and a bathhouse are available amenities for visitors to Lake Lurleen.

Huntsville

The U.S. Space and Rocket Center is the number one site to visit when planning Alabama vacations. Featuring exhibits about the Apollo mission, actual spacecraft, and even a Space Camp. Adults and children can participate in simulated space missions. You can experience triple G-forces, or watch a movie on the Spacedome Omnimax Theater. A day’s visit to the museum is relatively inexpensive, but a few days at Space Camp will run a few hundred dollars per person. This attraction is one of a kind, so if you are in Huntsville, Alabama, this is the place to visit.

Earlyworks Children’s Museum is a large interactive children’s history museum. They offer many history exhibits, as well as giant, but playable, musical instruments. Here, you can even walk the plank! Designed to cater to children, but to entertain the adults that bring them, this is a great family option.

The Nature lovers in your family will enjoy the Huntsville Botanical Garden. Featuring wooded trails on 110 acres of beautiful land, it is no surprise it is so popular. Colorful and varied flowers inhabit the many gardens on the site. You can even get educated about compost and vegetable gardens. Since they offer a popular railway, experiencing the beauty as you ride past on the train is a fun way to go. The Huntsville Botanical Garden even offers a Butterfly House, which is home to over fifty species of butterfly. Children and adults alike can see the awesome beauty of nature in a fun and educational way here.

Southern Adventures Amusement features mini golf, a water park, batting cages, bumper cars, and a roller coaster simulator. Other notable attractions include video games, go-karts, and a rock-climbing wall.

Mobile

Battleship Memorial Park, The U.S.S. Alabama is a gigantic World War II battleship that now sits in Mobile’s harbor. The battleship is only one of the things you will see and tour at this great park. Other attractions include, a World War II submarine, combat aircraft and tanks.

Montgomery

George Washington Carver Museum is located on the campus of Tuskegee University, one of the first schools for black Americans. Dr. George Washington Carver was one of the schools most famous professors. Dr. Carver invented more than 300 products made from peanuts – including, ink, shaving cream and soap. Visitors to the museum can see a replica of Dr. Carver’s laboratory and some of his inventions are on display.

The Civil Rights Memorial shows the importance of the civil rights movement in Alabama.

One other important stop in Alabama pertaining to civil rights is the Rosa Parks Library and Museum. There you can view her police record from the incident and many other interesting displays.

Talladega

Check out the Talladega Superspeedway or the International Motorsports Hall of Fame on your Alabama vacation. If there are no races during you visit don’t fret checkout the Hall of fame where visitors can see more than 150 racing vehicles.

Tuscumbia

Ivy Green is a historic home you will want to visit. The birthplace of Helen Keller, this house features most of the original furnishings and décor. Named for the English Ivy that engulfs the home and grounds, this gorgeous place is littered with shady trees. It features the main house and the small cottage where Helen was famously taught by Annie Sullivan. Children will usually be interested, as most kids must read The Miracle Worker in school, which is the story of how Annie Sullivan taught deaf, blind Helen to communicate with the world.

Woodville

Nature enthusiasts will also enjoy a visit to Cathedral Caverns, which is also part of the excellent state park system in Alabama. Deep in the cavern, there are rivers, canyons, and spectacular formations, such as the Frozen Waterfall and Stalagmite Mountain.
